Dr Bin Xu

Dr. Xu is currently a Minjiang Scholar Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at Huaqiao University, China, the founding director of the Key Laboratory for Intelligent Infrastructure and Monitoring (IIM) of Fujian Province and the International Centre for Safety and Sustainability of Civil Engineering. He had been a Lotus Scholar Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering, an associate dean of the College of Civil Engineering at Hunan University, China, and the director of the Hunan Provincial Key Lab on Damage Prognosis for Engineering Structures.  He has earned World’s Top 2% Scientist recognition (2021–2025) by Stanford/Elsevier for career-long scientific impact and also accomplished and named CNKI Highly Cited Scholar (Top 1%), 2024. He has authored 177 journal papers and 136 conference publications and delivered 20+ invited and keynote addresses worldwide. He is the inventor on 16 international patents adopted in large-scale civil infrastructure projects, translating unique research into practice. In his academic career, he has secured approximately USD $3.41 M in competitive research funding as PI/Co-PI, leading 9 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and contributing as co-investigator to 8 international collaborative research initiatives. He has been the PI of over 20 consulting projects from industry. He has empowered and mentored 80+ graduate researchers, including PhD and postdoctoral scholars, with 4 PhD graduates collaborating with academicians at the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE). He has initiated and led the first global studies on interface debonding detection of CFST members using PZT sensors and his first two papers (2013) on this topic have been cited over 400 times combined. His novel technology has been employed to successfully identify interface debonding on the Shezhen SEG Plaza that experienced a sudden shaking event in 2021, confirming both practical relevance and scientific correctness. He is the corresponding author of the 2024 Journal of Building Engineering paper on interface debonding initiation and propagation due to concrete shrinkage and creep under sustained loads, the first work addressing skyscraper safety and serviceability impacts. Currently, he served on the editorial boards of multiple international journals in capacities including Honorary Editor-in-Chief, Editor-in-Chief, Co-Editor-in-chief, Executive Editor, and Associate Editor. He is a renowned scholar with competitive academic appointments in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, and Japan, with extensive English-language teaching and research experience.
